Why Your Computer Feels Slower Than It Used To

Nothing broke. There was no error message, no crash, and no single day you could point to. Your computer just got slower, bit by bit, until the machine that used to open in seconds now makes you wait. It is one of the most common calls we get from homes around Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Raumati, and there is usually a simple, fixable reason behind it.

We hear a version of this most weeks, from Paekākāriki right through to Ōtaki: "It's not broken exactly, it's just slow." Usually it is not one big problem but three or four small ones stacking up together, none of which would matter much on their own. Here is what we actually find, in plain terms, from most frequent to least frequent.

An older-style hard drive

If your computer is more than six or seven years old, there is a good chance it still has an older-style hard drive rather than the newer kind most computers use today. The older type stores your files on a small disk that spins around very fast inside the computer, and because it has moving parts, it naturally wears down and slows over years of everyday use, much like anything else with moving parts. The newer kind, called an SSD, has no moving parts at all, which is why it can keep up far better with the constant small tasks that Windows and Mac are doing in the background all day. Swapping one for the newer kind is, more often than any other single fix, the difference between a computer that feels brand new again and one that does not.

Too many programs starting themselves

Every time you install something, from a printer to a chat app, there is a good chance it quietly added itself to the list of programs that start automatically when you turn the computer on. One or two make no difference. After a couple of years, that list can grow to twenty or thirty items, all competing for attention the moment you switch on. It is one of the most common causes of a slow start-up, and one of the easiest things to fix once you know where to look. On Windows, right-click an empty part of the taskbar at the bottom of the screen, choose Task Manager, then click the Startup Apps tab near the top. On a Mac, click the Apple menu in the top-left corner, choose System Settings, then General, then Login Items. Either screen lets you simply turn off anything you do not need running the moment you switch on.

Multiple antivirus programs

Running two antivirus programs at the same time is surprisingly common, and it can slow a computer down badly. Each one is constantly scanning files in the background, and they often end up scanning each other as well, which uses up far more of the computer's power than either would alone. This usually happens by accident: many new computers come with a trial antivirus already installed by the manufacturer, and if a second one is added later without properly removing the first, both carry on running side by side without anyone noticing.

Not enough RAM

Web browsers in particular have become much heavier than they used to be. A handful of open tabs, a video call and a document open at the same time can use more of a computer's working memory than an entire computer had ten years ago. If your machine is a few years old, it is often not "going wrong" so much as simply not built for how most people use a computer today. In simple terms, RAM is just where your computer keeps everything you currently have open, the programs and windows you can actually see on the screen, so the more of it a computer has, the more of that "stuff" it can comfortably hold open and work on at the same time.

A hard drive that is almost full

Windows and Mac computers both need some free space to work with. Once a drive gets close to full, everything from opening a file to installing an update gets noticeably slower. Old photos, downloads and videos are usually the biggest space-takers, and they are often just forgotten rather than actually needed.

Computers not being shut down, ever

Modern laptops make it very easy to simply close the lid and forget about it, day after day, without ever properly restarting. Sleep mode is convenient, but it is not the same as a proper shutdown: background programs, browser tabs and temporary files quietly build up in memory over weeks, and the computer never gets the clean slate that a restart gives it. A proper restart once a week is a simple habit that clears a surprising amount of this build-up.

Too many programs running at once

Even without extra startup programs, it is easy to end up running far more at the same time than a computer was really built for: dozens of browser tabs, a video call, a document, and a couple of other programs, all open together. Each one uses a share of the computer's memory and processing power, and once that adds up, everything else slows down as a result, even simple things like typing or switching between windows.

Cloud files synchronising, or glitching

Services like OneDrive, iCloud and Google Drive keep a copy of your files online and quietly update that copy every time something changes on your computer. Windows 11 signs most people up for this automatically through OneDrive, often without asking, which means extra work happens in the background every single time a file is created, edited or even just moved into a different folder. For most people this runs smoothly without being noticed, but on an older or busier computer, or when a large batch of files is being reorganised, it can be a genuine drag on performance.

Software bugs and not updating your system

Sometimes the slowdown is not really about the hardware at all. Software occasionally ships with genuine bugs that make it use far more memory or processing power than it should, and an update from the manufacturer is often the actual fix. Skipping updates for months or years compounds this further, since each new version of Windows or macOS usually brings performance improvements alongside the security fixes. Keeping your system reasonably up to date is one of the simplest ways to avoid a slowdown that has nothing to do with your computer's age at all.

What you can check yourself, right now

  • Restart it properly, rather than just closing the lid, at least once a week
  • Check how much free space is left on your main drive
  • Look at Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (Mac) for anything unfamiliar using a lot of power or memory
  • Uninstall programs you do not recognise or no longer use
  • Make sure Windows or Mac updates are actually up to date
