We carry out onsite repairs in the village, along with SSD and memory upgrades that often bring a perfectly sound machine back to life for a fraction of the cost of replacing it. Nothing has to go over the hill to a workshop.

A lot of the computers we meet here have been running the same way for the better part of a decade, often on a version of Windows that no longer receives security updates, with every file living on one drive and no backup anywhere. We modernise that carefully: current software, work stored somewhere it survives a failure, and access from more than one place.
The work here divides fairly neatly in two. Some of it is fixing a computer that has stopped doing its job. The rest is bringing an older setup up to date, so that a business run out of a village of a few hundred people can deal with customers anywhere without its systems getting in the way.

The hills sit right behind the village and take a bite out of what reaches it. Where coverage is weak indoors we strengthen the Wi-Fi and, if the mobile signal is the problem, set up calling over your broadband instead.
Paekākāriki is a genuinely small village, a few hundred households pressed onto a narrow strip between the escarpment and the sea. There is no computer shop and nothing close to one. The nearest options are over the hill towards Porirua or a drive up the coast, which turns a failed hard drive or a laptop that will not boot into a real disruption rather than an errand. Coming to the house or the premises is most of the value we offer here.
What makes the village interesting to work in is how much of its working life is self-employed. Artists and makers, writers, consultants, photographers, trades running the books from a spare room, a handful of small premises along the main street, and people letting out a bach or a cottage. Almost none of them sell mainly to the village. The business is local; the customers are not. That is precisely why the equipment matters more than its modest scale suggests. An invoicing system that has stopped working, an email address that has started landing in junk folders, or a laptop that dies the week a job is due are not minor inconveniences when you are the whole business.
The other pattern is age. A great many machines here have been running the same setup for the better part of a decade, quite often on a version of Windows that stopped receiving security updates some time ago, with every file on a single drive and no backup at all. People tend to assume modernising means buying everything new, and usually it does not. An SSD and extra memory will transform a machine that feels finished, and moving work somewhere it is backed up and reachable from more than one device costs very little. Where a replacement genuinely is the right answer we will say so plainly, and we will not dress up a working computer as a lost cause.
The escarpment is worth a brief mention because it does affect things. It rises immediately behind the village and blocks a good deal of signal arriving from the south, so mobile coverage varies noticeably street to street and is often poorer indoors. It is rarely the main reason we get called, but when someone's Wi-Fi is weak at the back of the house or calls keep dropping inside, that terrain is usually part of the story, and both are fixable.

No. We come to Paekakariki and work on the machine where it is, which is usually better anyway, because a good share of faults involve the printer, the network or how things are connected, and none of that travels with the computer if you carry it into a shop. Travel is the standard $30 and Paekakariki is a short trip for us from the Kapiti side.
Very often it is worth repairing, and by a wide margin. The single most common cause of a machine feeling finished is an old mechanical hard drive, and replacing that with an SSD plus adding memory will usually make a six or seven year old computer feel new for a small fraction of the cost of a replacement. There is a point where the sensible answer is a new machine, and when we reach it we will tell you straight rather than selling you an upgrade that will not hold up.
